The Telstra 165 'Country Phone' is one of two new WCDMA (Next G) handsets being added to the growing 'Blue Tick' range of rural specific phones. The other new Blue Tick handset is the Nokia N95, which will be in stores from mid-November.
"The Country Phone is the first Next G handset with a pullout antenna and it's built to meet the demands of Australia's tough outdoor conditions. The handset's bigger design incorporates a large, easy to use key pad to accommodate even the biggest of fingers and the phone is protected in rubber casing, is dust proof, shock and liquid resistant," Telstra Country Wide Group Managing Director, Mr Geoff Booth, said.
Telstra Product Management Group Managing Director, Ms Holly Kramer, said while the Country Phone had a focus on utility, the Nokia N95 had all the style and sophistication synonymous with one of the world's leading handset brands.
"Incorporating advanced multimedia functionality and elegant design, the Nokia N95 is the first Nokia handset to achieve Telstra's Blue Tick for handheld use in rural areas," Ms Kramer said.
Both new handsets offer easy 1-click content and applications including access to BigPond TV, 33 channels on Mobile FOXTEL, Sensis search services plus an array of free BigPond content such as the latest news and weather reports.

Australian mobile operator Telstra has launched a new calling solution for mobile phones that enables customers to roam between Telstra's CDMA and GSM networks using one handset and with one main phone number.
The new technology automatically directs voice calls from the CDMA to GSM service where the CDMA service is busy, switched off, out of range or unanswered. Where the GSM service is unavailable, calls to the GSM service will be diverted to a shared Telstra MessageBank.
The Motorola A840 is the first handset in Australia to utilise Telstra's new calling solution. Handsets from other manufacturers may be introduced in the months ahead. To roam on both Telstra's CDMA and GSM networks customers will also need to take up the 2in1 Calling Solution GSM Plan.
The handset combines 800/1900 CDMA, CDMA 1X and 900/1800 GSM, GPRS modes with seamless network switching. The company promisses that with the model A840 users can access the same content over GPRS as they would over a CDMA network.
The new mobile is packaged in a clamshell design with an integrated MP3 player, removable Trans-Flash memory, 2.2-inch colour display, speaker-independent speech recognition, and 1.2 megapixel integrated camera.
This launch coincides with the introduction of several new CDMA network roaming agreements in countries including Hong Kong, Thailand and China.
